EXPLORING ROMANTIC VALUES AS SEEN IN HAWTHORNE’S THE HOUSE OF SEVEN GABLES
Abstract
This article tries to explore Romantic values in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The House of Seven Gables. In analyzing the novel, the writer use Moral-Philosophical approach and Expressive approach. The writer also uses qualitative-descriptive method in applying the theory. There are some Romantic values of The House of Seven Gables. First, family relationship. Second value is fate and free will. The next value is cheerful expression which was given by Phoebe to anybody. Other value is wealth and social status do not bring happiness The last value is showed by Holgrave, one of Maule family who didn’t want to have revenge with Pyncheon. This writing has contribution for comprehending and analyzing American literary works around 19th century.
